Mahaska Bottling Company (MBC) is a family owned and operated business distributing Pepsi products operating under a franchise from PepsiCo, Inc. We are committed to provide superior products, delivery and merchandising services to our customers and communities.
Mahaska Bottling Company has a long family history that dates back to the early 1900’s.
In 1918, a former railroad man and coalmine worker named Harry Morgan took his meager savings and purchased a small bottling plant in Oskaloosa where he proceeded to bottle a variety of soft drink flavors with primitive hand-operated machinery. Back in those days, the soft drinks were bottled in beer bottles then sold and delivered by the bottler himself using horse-drawn wagons.
In 1922, Harry’s son-in-law Arnold Muhl joined him at the plant in Oskaloosa. Six years later, they decided to take on a nationally advertised, rapidly growing soft drink called Pepsi-Cola which resulted in steady growth for the Mahaska Bottling Company. Shortly after his grandfather Harry’s passing in 1947, John Muhl came on board to work with his father Arnold, and together they directed the business. In 1961, they built a new plant in Oskaloosa and, by 1981, purchased additional plants in Kansas and Nebraska. The additional plants of Pepsi Cola of Salina, Kansas and Pepsi Cola of Norfolk, Nebraska expanded their business to service 14 counties in Kansas and 15 counties in Nebraska along with the current 10 counties being served in Iowa.
In the early 1990s, Mahaska Bottling Company became a shareholder of the bottling cooperative Wis-Pak Inc, consolidating the manufacturing process for all locations, streamlining logistics & supply chain management, and achieving economies of scale. Today, WIS-PAK, Inc. handles almost 10% of the North American Pepsi Americas Beverages (PAB) volume and over 40% of independent volume.
In 1993, Brad Muhl purchased Mahaska Bottling Company and all of its entities from John Muhl. As a fourth generation owner operator, Brad successfully consolidated the ownership of the company under one leader for the first time since being founded by Harry Morgan. Brad fulfilled several brand company responsibilities which included the position of Chairman of the Pepsi-Cola Company Marketing Committee. One of his goals in that position was to preserve the independent bottling system and the rights of its franchisees all over the world. In addition, Brad grew the business aggressively all the while achieving an industry leading market share versus the other competitors as well as embarking on several business development ventures such as full-line vending and coffee that are a core part of the business and its future growth today.
In 2012, Branden Muhl, son of Brad Muhl, became President and CEO of the company, continuing the tradition initiated by Harry Morgan and Brad Muhl of consolidated ownership under a single leader. Today, the company consists of MBC Management, Mahaska Bottling Company, Pepsi-Cola Bottling of Salina, KS, Pepsi-Cola Bottling of Norfolk, NE, Snack Express Iowa & Kansas, and KBOE Radio Station. Branden is expounding upon Brad's business development efforts including building an independently owned brand portfolio, engaging in territorial expansion, and re-branding the company.
